Our Research Projects

The Liu Lab is dedicated to studying the fundamental innate immune sensing mechanisms and their interplay with viral pathogens. We leverage state-of-the-art experimental approaches that combine genome-wide phenotypic screens, reverse genetics, and animal models to dissect the host-virus interface on a molecular level. Our ultimate goal is to achieve bench-to-bedside translation of innovative antiviral therapies and vaccines.

Our research is three-pronged:

  • Innate immune sensing and regulatory mechanisms

    • ISG15 modulation of cellular responses and its perturbation by viral pathogens

    • Effector-triggered immunity and viral antagonisms

  • RNA virus biology

    • Mechanisms of influenza A virus and coronavirus replication and pathogenicity

    • Host determinants of abortive viral replication

  • Respiratory RNA virus attenuation and vaccine design

    • Viral genome remodelling and mechanisms of virus attenuation

    • T-cell targeted influenza and coronavirus vaccines

Land Acknowledgement

McGill University is on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. We acknowledge and thank the diverse Indigenous peoples whose presence marks this territory on which peoples of the world now gather.
